San Francisco Bay Area-based band, Cardboard People, are excited to announce the release of their highly anticipated, eponymously named debut album - a powerful statement of cultural activism, self love and community - set to drop on April 3rd with Warchant Records. The album showcases the band's dedication to combining their socially conscious messaging with lively party tracks, effectively utilizing their music as a means to spark important conversations and engage their listeners on both a personal and political level.

An eclectic pop band that defies genre boundaries, Cardboard People combines soul, hip hop, electro-funk, and punk influences to create a unique and powerful sound. The band, consisting of Yunoka Berry (singer-songwriter and actor/model), Jim Greer (synthesizer player and producer), Rhonda Kinard (bass guitarist), and Genesis Valentine (drummer), uses their semi-anonymous art and visuals as an avatar for their political messaging. This album marks a turning point for the band, putting a period on their writing during the pandemic and establishing their unique sound. The band has become a favorite among the So Far Sounds community and have been regularly invited to perform at top-tier local events, including a special Black History Month showcase in February. They've also secured a licensing deal for film and TV with Shelly Bay Music in New York, and have even co-written a song for Big Freedia, slated to be released later this year. With their debut album and ongoing recording sessions, Cardboard People are solidifying their place as a standout act in the Bay Area music scene.

With a shared passion for classic sounds and a desire to innovate, Yunoka and Jim come from different backgrounds but have a lot in common. They embody the spirit of rebels who never grew up and are still pursuing their dreams, nostalgic for the 90s and rejecting societal expectations of adulthood. Through their music, they aim to break down cultural barriers and challenge the notion that people are inherently different. Heavily influenced by timeless tracks such as "Whip It," "She Blinded Me with Science," and "Raspberry Beret," which are remembered for their unique sound and meaningful lyrics, they aim to capture this same essence by creating tracks that not only resonate with audiences but also spark conversations and leave a lasting impression. Created through a collaborative process, tracks started out as hip hop bangers, later evolving into more polished pop tracks through the expertise of each member. “Cardboard People” features collaborations with music legends like Domino from Hieroglyphics and Del the Funky Homosapien, who played keys on "My High Right," and guitarist Merlot from the Jack Johnson band. The lyrics, written by Yunoka, delve into important themes such as dystopian futures, the experiences of being black and female, romance, and joy. The underlying message of the album is unity, not individualism. Through their eclectic pop sound, socially conscious lyrics, and lively party tracks, Cardboard People hopes to encourage their listeners to see the similarities that exist between us all.
